After a Saturday of enjoying the much-coveted Sea Smoke Pinot Noir “allocation” left in the cabin of my friend, he offered me a consolation — a glass of 2009 Kynsi Pinot Noir Edna Valley. To say I was humbled is not enough. No, I was as smitten at my first taste by this Kynsi and ...

Wines for Easter Feast: Syrah & Shiraz

By Danielle Gerbracht. I’m so blessed to have kind and beautiful friends, as I’m sure many of you do. But it is truly a blessing when you get to meet and spend time with their other friends you’ve never met before and everyone becomes one big happy family. I got lucky last weekend. I strolled into my girlfriend Emily’s home and I was immediately swept up in the smell of bacon, and the sound of Rosemary Clooney and warm laughter. Emily was in the midst of making breakfast sandwiches on Model Bakery English muffins while her flat mate Terra Jane was whipping up the next round of Bloody Marys and mimosas. The sun was shining, and what better way to kick off another weekend of tasting. Chateauneuf-du-pape and Shiraz were on the menu.

Hops and Hogs Central Coast Chefs Throwdown

Every year, the Boutique Hotel Collection (BHC) Chefs create beautiful culinary events for numerous philanthropic fundraisers, and if you were not aware of this before, BHC is constantly giving back to the community. I’ve been going to Wine Waves & Beyond for the past three years, and this special fundraising dinner menu for the Hops and Hogs Central Coast Chefs Throwdown is the most sumptuous and creative yet.

Non-Vintage Pinot Noir

By Danielle Gerbracht. Champagne, Crémant, Sparkling wine, Frizzante, Asti, Cava: It doesn’t matter if your bubbles of choice are sweet or dry, French or otherwise. When most of us hear “non-vintage” our mind immediately goes to bubbles. If yours doesn’t well then you are more educated or drinking broader blends; because to me, “non-vintage” screams sparkling. Who makes non-vintage still, dry wines for retail? Apparently Chile.

By Danielle GerbrachtWe are almost two weeks into spring and a lot of the country is still looking at some cold, snowy or rainy weather and more of it to come. Classic California, that can change in a few hours or overnight but I’m not hedging any bets as I plan for Easter. Don’t get me wrong, if the sun bursts out and I can make it to the market for a Getariako Txakolina and some oysters I’ll be the first to jump in the car but I’m not holding my breath. With that said, I think a wine with a little more body and structure will make for a great Easter white.
